Venezuela 1926 5 Bolivares Very Fine (VF20) DOD

The bolivar is named for (and depicts) Simón Bolívar, Latin American freedom fighter known colloquially as the Liberator of America. Born in Venezuela, Bolívar was educated in Spain, where he picked up the ideals of the Enlightenment: truth, reason, liberty, and the universality of human rights. By the end of his time in Europe, Bolívar had sworn to end Spanish rule in the Americas. When Napoleon had Spain distracted, Bolívar leapt on the fight for independence. He fought the Royalists fiercely, defeating the Spanish in New Granada, Venezuela, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. He is widely regarded as a hero and a cultural icon to this day, and the nations of Bolivia and Venezuela (as the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela) are named after him.

The head on the obverse of these coins is Bolívar, while the reverse shows the coat of arms of Venezuela. In this period, 5 bolivares coins were made from .900 silver and weighed about 25 grams.
