Isabella II was unified Spain's only queen regnant, ruling from 1833 until she was deposed in 1868. Following her father, Ferdinand VII, to the throne at the age of two, she had her reign immediately contested by her uncle, Infante Carlos. General unwillingness to accept a female sovereign led to a period of intrigues, conspiracies, and even outright war. In 1868, Isabella was deposed and sent into exile in France, where she formally abdicated and passed the throne to her son, Alfonso XII.
