Mexico 1836 1/4 Real (DOD)

1836 was a chaotic year for Mexico. The previous year had seen large political changes that led to the establishment of the Centralist Republic of Mexico. This period would see the uninterrupted rule of the Conservative Party -- but the infighting amongst Conservatives would ensure a continuation of the same sort of political unrest that plagued the First Mexican Republic. A particularly large blow was delivered in March, when Texas declared independence from Mexico and applied to join the United States. They would not be accepted immediately -- introducing such a gigantic slave-holding state into the volatile world of 1830s U.S. politics would be utter havoc -- but the fate of Texas would define U.S.-Mexico relations for the next decade.

This 1836 Mexican quarter real depicts an eagle, its wings spread, holding a snake in its beak while it perches on a nopal cactus.
