Italy 1810 Napoleon I 2 Lire About Good (AG3) DOD
Napoleon created the Kingdom of Italy in May of 1805, consolidating annexed territories in the northeast of the Italian peninsula more-or-less centred around Venice. He named his stepson, Eugène de Beauharnais, his Viceroy, and rapidly introduced a series of reforms that entirely reorganized the government and military. Napoleon held Italy -- and, indeed, was referred to officially as Emperor of France and King of Italy -- until he was forced to abdicate on April 11, 1814. Eugène de Beauharnais fought to maintain his inheritance, but was eventually forced to surrender to incoming Austrians and was sentenced to exile in Bavaria. The short-lived Kingdom of Italy was annexed by Austria, who absorbed most of it into the new Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia.
One of Napoleon's many reforms was currency. The new Italian lire, created by imperial decree, was to be the same size, weight, and composition as the French franc. This 2 lire coin is made of .900 silver and weighs about 10 grams. The bust on the obverse is that of Napoleon, facing right. The reverse shows the crowned arms of Italy.
