Hungary 1763 Maria Theresa 1 Denier (DOD)
Maria Theresa was the ruler of the Habsburg monarchy from 1740 until her death in 1780. Rejecting the expectation that she would cede power to her husband and son, Maria Theresa was the only woman to rule the Holy Roman Empire in her own right. Her reign was marked by institutional, medical, educational, and financial reforms, and by a restructuring of agriculture and the military that strengthened the country. She was also zealously pious and ordered numerous expulsions of Protestants, Jews, and Freemasons. Overall, though, her reign is considered highly successful and responsible for the modernization of Austria-Hungary -- even if she was also a flinty and unyielding autocrat.
Maria Theresa's denier features the twofold Hungarian shield on the obverse. On the reverse, though difficult to make out, is a radiant Madonna and Child.
