Hungary 1868 Franz Josef 4 Kreuzers (DOD)
Franz Joseph was Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary from 1848 until his death in 1916. His reign was marked by struggles against nationalist movements seeking to separate Hungary from Austria, and by several devastating personal tragedies. The first of these was the Mayerling incident, in which Franz Josef's eldest son and heir apparent, Rudolf, was found dead with his mistress in a hunting lodge, apparently having died in a murder-suicide pact. The second was the assassination of his wife, the beautiful and fashionable Elisabeth ("Sisi") by an Italian anarchist. The third was the assassination of his nephew (and new heir presumptive) and niece-in-law, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie, by a Bosnian revolutionary. These last deaths would provoke Austria-Hungary into war with Serbia, which mobilized Russia, who was challenged by Germany, who then declared war on France and invaded Belgium, which triggered war with Britain. The circle was closed when Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia, and World War I was in motion. The war was still raging when Franz Josef died in 1916.
This 1868 4 kreuzer coin dates to twenty years into Franz Josef's long reign. The obverse depicts the Hungarian coat of arms.
