Guernsey 1834 William IV 8 Doubles F-VF (F12) DOD
Guernsey is a self-governing British Crown Dependency located in the English Channel close to the coast of France. Historically, fishing, knitting, and quarrying were important industries, and the island acted as a port for trade with Europe, the West Indies, and the Americas. Around the time of the Napoleonic Wars, however, Guernsey became a base for British privateers -- that is, legalized pirates who were free to prey on the ships of Britain's enemies.
This 1834 coin dates to the reign of William IV -- the final king of the Hanoverian dynasty, before the rise of Queen Victoria.
