In the late 19th century, Prussia was central to German unification and the confederation's transition into the German Empire.
This .868 silver thaler features the bust of Wilhelm I. Wilhelm ruled from 1861 until he died in 1888, and oversaw the unification of Germany into the German Empire. He became the first Emperor in 1871 and was remembered during the reign of his grandson as Emperor Wilhelm the Great. The reverse shows an eagle, a longtime symbol on German coinage.
