Despite eighteen pregnancies, Queen Anne died childless in 1714. The 1701 Act of Settlement named George Ludwig, Elector of Hanover, her successor, passing over fifty other claimants who were either too Catholic or not Protestant enough. Despite acting as the King of England, George and his Hanoverian successors remained the rulers of the Electorate of Hanover within the Holy Roman Empire. This 1708 silver coin features George's titles on the obverse. The reverse shows Saint Andrew carrying his cross.
