Elected in 1658, Leopold I was one of the Holy Roman Empire's most long-lived monarchs. His reign was marked by war in the west with France and in the east with the Ottomans, but the constant strife also forced Leopold to establish centralized institutions that strengthened the Empire overall. He was a patron of the arts and was particularly passionate about music, even composing several works himself.
Leopold sported an unfortunately prominent form of the Habsburg jaw, a particularly obtrusive form of mandibular prognathism caused by the family's multi-generational inbreeding. This was so prominent on his coinage that he earned the rather mean-spirited nickname "Hogmouth." To be fair to Leopold, his jaw does not seem nearly so humungous in his portraiture, suggesting that perhaps poor old Hogmouth was just done dirty on his coinage in particular.
