The principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel comprised nearly 4000 square kilometres of modern Germany. In the 18th century, it embraced Enlightenment values, encouraging education and promoting theatre. The dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel maintained a substantial art and natural history collection, which became the basis for a later Natural History Museum. Dissolved during the rule of Napoleon, the state was reestablished in 1815 as the Duchy of Brunswick.
