France 1848 5 Francs Extra Fine (EF40) DOD
1848 was the year of the February Revolution, also known as the French Revolution of 1848. The culmination of decades of on-and-off fighting between Royalist and Republican (and Bonapartist!) factions, France finally boiled over into open conflict in February. Intense urban fighting ensued, and eventually King Louis-Philippe was forced to step down. The Second Republic was promptly declared -- though it would only last until the rise of Napoleon III in 1852.
5 Franc coins from this year can show either the Republican "Liberty - Equality - Fraternity" obverse, or a bust of Louis-Philippe. This example is of the latter. These coins are crafted from .900 silver and weigh about 25 grams.
