In 1822, Brazil gained independence from Portugal and established itself as an empire in its own right. Ruled by Emperor Pedro I, it was, like all historical empires, a bit of an ethical mixed bag. Citizens enjoyed liberal civil rights, democratic parliamentary elections, and guaranteed freedom of speech. Still, its flourishing economy relied on a system of slavery that was becoming outlawed throughout the rest of the world. When slavery was abolished in 1888, the Empire would not outlive it. General apathy on behalf of the Crown, combined with an increasingly popular Republican movement, led to a coup on November 15, 1889. The reigning emperor, Pedro II, was so uninterested in ruling that he not only quietly accepted the rebels' terms but also quashed monarchical support himself. Pedro retired to Paris, France, while Brazil shifted to dictatorial rule.
This 1863 1000 Réis coin dates to the middle of Pedro II's long reign. These coins were made from .917 silver and weigh about 12.75 grams.
