Bolivia in the 1850s was chaotic. The country had gained independence from Spain in 1825 and named itself for revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar -- but it only enjoyed a brief period of stability before the economy began to decline and a series of corrupt strongmen started wrestling for control of the young country. Starting in 1847, this was Manuel Isidoro Belzu, who had wrested control from his predecessor with the support of the masses. He had the terrifying and rather effective idea to court the support of the indigenous population by inciting them to commit acts of violence against colonial landowners. For this, he is remembered as "Tata" Belzu by the indigenous people, and a crazed madman by everyone else. In 1855, he fled his position for Europe and was succeeded by his son-in-law, who was himself overthrown by 1857 by José María Linares. Linares was the first civilian president of Bolivia, but he was promptly ousted by a military coup in 1861.
The 4 soles coin in 1857 was made of .667 silver. The portrait on the reverse is that of Simón Bolívar, whilst the obverse shows two llamas under a tree.
