1807 was probably a rough year for Francis I. Formerly Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire, he had just come off a crushing string of defeats that culminated in the Battle of Austerlitz in December of 1805. Here, Napoleon had thrashed the combined forces of Francis and Russian Tsar Alexander I so badly that it effectively shattered the thousand-year-old Holy Roman Empire. Francis narrowly avoided becoming Napoleon's vassal by transferring the power and possessions of the Habsburg Family to a new dynasty outside of the French Emperor's reach. This would make Francis II into Francis I of Austria, the title he would hold until his death in 1835.
