Striking a coin produces a great deal of heat between planchet and die. Occasionally, this heat can cause tiny gas pockets inside the planchet to expand, creating bulging bubbles like cheese on a pizza. If the bubble remains intact, the error is referred to as an "occluded" gas bubble. If the bubble pops, it's referred to as a "ruptured" gas bubble.
