For cost and efficiency reasons, the Bank of Canada switched from the traditional steel engraving process for the backs of notes, to a flat printing process called lithography, where ink sits on the surface of the note rather than being pressed into it. On these notes, lines and shading appear smoother and can be less sharp, and there is no raised feel on the back. As portraits and security features appeared on the front of the notes, the steel engraving was kept for the front of the notes.
