Barclays Bank Canada was incorporated in Montreal, Quebec in 1929, as the Canadian subsidiary of Barclays Bank, one of the oldest and most influential financial institutions based in the United Kingdom, as part of their global expansion that took place during the 20th century. In 1956, it merged with the Imperial Bank of Canada, the predecessor of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, and then in 1996 it merged again with HBC (later HSBC Bank Canada). While Barclays no longer has a retail banking presence in Canada, its global investment banking division, Barclays Capital, continues to operate in Canada, focusing on corporate finance and capital markets.
