The 1963 Vatican 500 Lire Sede Vacante MCMLXIII Silver Coin was issued to commemorate the interregnum following the death of Pope John XXIII on June 3, 1963. "Sede Vacante" refers to the period between the death or resignation of a pope and the election of his successor. The obverse features the arms of Cardinal Benedetto Aloisi-Masella, while the reverse depicts a descending dove in front of a sun with the denomination below. Struck in .835 silver, the coin comes in a small red album. Please note the coin shows scratches and light toning.
