USA Department of Defense Proud Military Family Challenge Coin
Challenge coins as they exist today have been carried by the members of military units since at least the 1950s. They are meant to be presented in response to a "challenge" -- that is, they are tokens that prove affiliation with the group when asked. These challenges are sometimes called "coin checks." In more recent times, challenge coins have been adopted by other organizations seeking to encourage internal camaraderie, including police departments, first responders, and even corporate offices.
This bronze challenge coin is meant for military family members, specifically within the United States Department of Defense. The reverse shows the DOD's insignia, whilst the obverse shows all of the US Armed Forces' emblems encircled with blue enamel.
