United Kingdom 2004 D-Day 60th Anniversary "Beach Landings" 3-Coin Tin Set (light wear)
A wonderful collectible for any World War II buff!
On June 6, 1944, the Allies commenced Operation Overlord with the invasion of five beaches in Normandy, France. The goal was to liberate France -- and, eventually, all of Western Europe -- from Nazi occupation. Despite heavy resistance, 135,000 men landed in a single day, changing the course of the war and cementing the 1944 Normandy landing as the largest seaborne invasion in history. Now known colloquially as D-Day (after the military term), the Normandy landings marked the beginning of the end for the Axis powers. Allied victory was no longer a question of if, but when.
In 2004, the Royal Mint released this deluxe tin honouring the 60th anniversary of the D-Day Landings. It includes three base-metal commemorative crowns: the first depicts a soldier on Sword Beach; the second depicts the HMS Belfast; and the third shows an aircraft in flight. Each design also shows a poppy. Also included are a replica medal, a double-sided poster, and a certificate of authenticity. Please note, this set is in excellent shape, but it is a second-hand item and may exhibit some light signs of wear and handling.
