The 1954 Canadian Landscape series of banknotes held a dark secret … Well, not really, but for a lot of people, the curls in Elizabeth's hair resembled the grinning face of a demon! It takes a little creativity and a bit of squinting, but right behind her ear is an inadvertent pattern of highlights and shadows that look a bit like two heavy eyes, a hooked nose, and a viciously smirking mouth. There was not actually any controversy until two years after the note debuted, when the Toronto Daily Star reported that the face was being addressed by Commons. Of course, now everybody could see it. The Devil's Face, as it was called, circulated as a curiosity in Canadian and American news until it was quietly replaced with a version of the portrait that had darker hair.
