2013 USA Caroline & Benjamin Harrison First Spouse $1 Presidential Coin & Medal Set
Starting in 2005, the United States Mint honoured the First Spouses -- that is, the wife (or, theoretically, husband) of a sitting president -- with a series of half-ounce gold coins. These designs were also used to produce bronze medals, which were sold paired with their respective president's $1 coin. This set celebrates Caroline Harrison, who married the future 23rd president Benjamin Harrison in 1853. Caroline was an educated and philanthropic woman, passionate about art, music, literature, and charity work. She was a supporter of women's rights movements, and it was on her advice that Alice Sanger became the first woman appointed to White House staff. Harrison was also the first President General of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a women's organization that celebrated the contributions of women to the founding of the United States and raised funds for Johns Hopkins University Medical School on the condition that it admit women, which made it the first medical school in the United States to accept women and paved the way for similar policies at other schools. The reverse design of this commemorative token shows an orchid and two paintbrushes, referencing Caroline's passion for art.
This item comes in its original packaging, including outer plastic wrap.
