2005 Canada $5 Alberta Centennial Special Edition Fine Silver NGC Certified PF69 UHC
Alberta and Saskatchewan joined Confederation in 1905. For most of its history, European development in the West was driven by the fur trade, and any land west of Ontario belonged to the Hudson's Bay Company. As the fur trade wound down, the Company sold its territories to the Government of Canada, which largely took them to solidify its claim to the West and head off American expansionism. Life in these new provinces was not for the faint-of-heart; the winters were harsh and the prairies were stubborn. Still, immigrants flooded in and a mosaic of cultures began to form. Communities grew. After 30 years of growth, Alberta and Saskatchewan were created out of the North-West Territory.
This 3/4 ounce fine silver coin celebrates Alberta's official centennial with a detailed image celebrating two of the province's defining industries: cattle ranching and oil drilling. This coin has been certified PF69 by NGC.
