2000 Bancroft, ON, Mineral Capital of Canada $2 Trade Token
The earliest settlers in what is now Bancroft were United Empire Loyalists -- that is, American Loyalists who fled to British territory after the American Revolution. The second wave was Irish immigrants, who in the 1850s were fleeing the Great Famine. This made the basis for a thriving little community, and eventually the town became a mining centre as first gold, and then sodalite and other minerals were discovered in the 1860s. By 1900, Bancroft had been connected to the Central Ontario Railway and it was a bustling hub of industry.
Today, Bancroft calls itself the Mineral Capital of Canada, which is displayed proudly on the obverse of this $2 trade token. The reverse shows Bancroft's coat of arms.
