John Brown, a dry-goods merchant in early 19th century Halifax, imported and sold manufactured textiles, fabrics, clothing, and ready-made household materials. To assist with the shortage of small-denominational coinage that was occurring in Nova Scotia at the time, he released this token, which served as both local currency and advertising for his store.
Obverse: A thistle in the centre, with the legend in latin "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT" ("No one can strike me impunity") around.
Reverse: A ship sailing to the right, with the legend around.
NS-16A1 Variety: The token is made of copper, and the edge is reeded.
