John Alexander Barry was was a successful dry-goods merchant in Nova Scotia. From 1826 to 1830, he was a member of the 13th General Assembly of Nova Scotia, until he was expelled for making an allegation about a fellow member and refused to retract his statement. Barry issued copper half penny tokens along with other prominent merchants in Halifax to help ease the shortage of small-denominational coinage that was occurring in Nova Scotia at the time.

Obverse: Laureate and draped bust facing right, with the denomination above and the date below.
Reverse: Ship sailing to the right, with the legend around.

NS-14A5 Variety: The bust is small, there are 7 laurel leaves, and the die axis is medallic.
