Canadian Heritage Medal Series: Legacy of the Mountie 5oz .9999 Fine Silver in Case. Includes COA and case.

Based on the 1915 painting Mountie with Cattle Ranchers by Canadian artist John Innes, the dynamic reverse design on this fine silver medal depicts a mounted officer approaching a cattle ranch in the Rocky Mountains. The Mounties were founded in 1873 as the North-West Mounted Police to maintain order in the newly acquired North-West Territories. Organized like a cavalry regiment and dressed in a scarlet jacket that recalled the traditional British army uniform, this new police force cracked down on American whiskey runners and squashed indigenous resistance -- which has left them with a rather mixed legacy. In 1920, the North-West Mounted Police joined with the Dominion Police (whose job was to guard government buildings) to form the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The medal's obverse design features a collage that places an 1873 newspaper advertisement seeking recruits to the new mounted police over the Act of Parliament that established them.

This beautiful medal is one of a series that celebrates scenes from Canadian history. Like the previous "Fathers of Confederation" medal, the "Legacy of the Mountie" is comprised of five ounces of pure silver that features a stunning antique finish. The medal comes in a gorgeous wooden case with a removable freestanding plaque for easy display.
