Founded in 1078 by William the Conqueror and expanded through the 14th century, the Tower of London is one of England's most famous heritage sites. Throughout its long life, it has been a royal residence, an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, a mint, a public record office, and, of course, a prison. The Tower has long been the backdrop for many a dark and dramatic tale from English history, including episodes such as the beheading of Anne Boelyn, and the mysterious disappearances of the Princes in the Tower.
This souvenir token celebrated the Tower's 900th anniversary in 1978. The obverse shows the Tower itself, whilst the reverse shows one of the Tower's famous ravens. Legend has it that when the ravens leave the Tower, the British monarchy will fall.
