Group Lot of 9x Cambodia c.1975-2007 Banknotes, Various Denominations, VF to UNC, 9pcs
Located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is bordered by Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Between the 9th and 15th centuries, Cambodia was the heart of the Khmer Empire, the largest state of its kind in Southeast Asia. The centre of its power was at Angkor, an absolutely massive city that covered nearly 3,000 square kilometres and supported a population of a million people. The Khmer Empire's time in the sun came to an end when continuous bouts of war with the Vietnamese to the east and the Siamese (Thai) to the west left it weak enough to be colonized by France in 1863. French colonization lasted until 1953 -- with the brief but important exception of Japanese imperial occupation during the Second World War -- when Cambodia gained independence and took up its traditional monarchy once more. Of course, this coincides with the onset of the Vietnam War and the larger Cold War. The country was quickly torn apart by civil war waged between Soviet-backed communist groups and American-backed anti-communist groups, resulting in the bloody reign of the Khmer Rouge. Led by Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge massacred so many people that it gave rise to the term "killing fields," used by Cambodian journalists to describe the sites of mass execution that dotted the countryside. The Khmer Rouge regime was toppled by a Vietnamese invasion in 1978, but it wasn't until 1993 that Cambodia was restored and reconstruction could begin. A breathtakingly beautiful country covered in lush, tropical forests, Cambodia's history encompasses the highest highs and the lowest lows of the human experience.
This lot of nine Cambodian notes traces the country's modern history, from the 1956-1975 1 riel note that circulated during the Khmer Rouge's takeover, through the 1970s and 1980s Vietnamese occupation, and into the modern day. All notes are in great shape, with most graded Uncirculated. Please see images for a complete inventory of all the notes you will receive.
