In 1840, George, Andrew, Robert, and I.S. Rutherford left England for Newfoundland to become general merchants. Robert and I.S. Rutherford settled in St. John's, while George and Andrew decided on Harbour Grace. Shortly thereafter, they released tokens featuring the Rutherford Family's Coat of Arms on one side, and the image of a hanging dead sheep on the other.
