In 1904, St. Louis, Missouri hosted a world's fair in honour of the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, wherein the United States doubled its size with the purchase of the territory of Louisiana from France. The fair showcased many technologies that would become commonplace in modern life, including the telephone, x-ray, private automobile, airplane, and electric streetcar.
A variety of tokens were offered as souvenirs at the event. This one features a reverse engraving of the Cascade Gardens, a beautiful expanse of landscaping, flowerbeds and fountains that surrounded a huge basin of flowing water. The obverse commemorates the Louisiana Purchase.
