1943-1944 Newfoundland $6 War Savings Certificate PCGS Certified Choice About New (58PPQ)

By the mid-1940s, World War II was entering its devastating climax, and funds, amongst all participants, were running low. The answer in Canada was the introduction of war savings certificates: low-risk investments that would increase in value after the war. Canadians would buy in, receiving the certificates as promissory notes, and their cash would go to the war effort. This was also true for the future Canadian province of Newfoundland, which was, until 1949, a British dominion.

This Newfoundland war savings certificate would have been worth $6 when it was purchased, and this denomination was available between 1943 and 1944. It was not, however, purchased, and it was cancelled in 1953 (visible on the stamp in the centre). It has been graded Choice About New by PCGS.
