United Kingdom 2014 SS Gairsoppa Britannia Quarter-Ounce .999 Silver Coin in Informational Folder (Toned) (No Tax)
Struck by the Royal Mint, this quarter ounce .999 silver coin is made from silver salvaged from the wreck of the SS Gairsoppa. In 1941, the Gairsoppa was on its way home from Calcutta when it was torpedoed by a German U-boat. Tonnes of war supplies -- including tea, iron, and silver -- went straight to the bottom with the ship and most of her crew. A few survivors clung to a lifeboat for a harrowing two weeks, slowly succumbing to the elements until only one -- Second Mate Richard Ayres -- was left alive.
In 2011, the wreck of the Gairsoppa was discovered off the west coast of Ireland. $38 million worth of silver bars were recovered. Some of that silver finally made it to the Royal Mint, where it was bound in 1941, and was minted into these highly collectable silver coins. Each coin, which features Britannia holding a trident on the obverse, comes packaged in an informational folder that details the ship and the incredible survivor's story of Richard Ayres. A truly unique gift for any history enthusiast.
Please note, the obverse of the coin has begun to tone around the rim.
