Situated at the nexus of East and West, North and South, Afghanistan has been called both the Heart of Asia and the Graveyard of Empires for the significant role it has played in the history of so many peoples. Its rugged, fertile land has seen continuous habitation since the Middle Paleolithic, with urban settlement dating back 5000 years. This puts Afghanistan on par with Egypt and Iraq for sheer archaeological and historical significance. The modern Islamic republic, to which these notes date, was founded in 1973 following the removal of King Mohammad Zahir Shah. The obverse features horsemen competing in Afghanistan's national sport, Buzkashi, whilst the reverse displays the 5th century Bala Hissar fortress at Kabul.
