Sweden 1675 Karl XI Coronation at Uppsala Commemorative Medal VF-EF (VF30)
Karl XI (1655-1697) came to the throne in 1660, aged just 4. After scrapping with the Danes in the Scanian War of 1675-1679, his reign was relatively peaceful. Interestingly, Karl XI was not the eleventh Karl to rule Sweden; in fact, he was the fifth. Karl and his ancestors drew their regnal numbers according to the History of all the kings of the Geats and Swedes, a pseudohistorical 16th century text that began the Swedish royal line with a grandson of Noah. To appeal to the royal family, the author, Johannes Magnus, wholly invented six entire Karls to inflate the reigning monarch's ordinal number.
