Though it is now known for its world-class theatre, in 1885, when Stratford was incorporated as a city, it was an industrial settlement. Perched on the Avon River, it boasted a sawmill, a grist mill, and a major railway repair yard. At one time, a sixth of all Canadian furniture came from Stratford. This medal, minted to celebrate Stratford's transition from a town to a city of 9000 people, highlights local industry.
