The Battle of Britain was, in fact, a series of intense aerial battles fought between July and October of 1940. After the blitzkrieg invasion of France, Germany effectively had Britain cornered. The plan was to batter the Royal Air Force into submission via a series of protracted air raids, accompanied by strikes on manufacturing and terror bombings on civilians, leaving Britain vulnerable to invasion. Hitler assumed that Britain would recognize the hopelessness of its situation and capitulate; to his surprise, it absolutely did not. Instead, the RAF outclassed the Luftwaffe at every turn: in skill, manufacturing, and technology. Maintaining the assault soon became a huge drain on German resources -- resources they would absolutely need in the looming showdown with Russia. It would be the first major defeat for Germany, marking the start of their downfall.
