Founded in Montreal in 1835, La Banque du Peuple was established to provide French-Canadian merchants and professionals with greater access to banking services at a time when the colony's financial sector was largely dominated by English-controlled institutions. The bank quickly became associated with the growing Patriote movement, as many of its directors and shareholders supported political reform and greater representation for the French-speaking population of Lower Canada. Although the bank itself was not directly involved in the armed uprisings of the Lower Canada Rebellion in 1837–1838, several of its leading figures, including its first president, Louis-Michel Viger, maintained close ties to Patriote leaders. Indeed, Viger was a cousin to two major Patriote leaders: Louis-Joseph Papineau, and Denis-Benjamin Viger. Following the outbreak of the rebellion, the colonial government viewed many Reform supporters with suspicion, placing the bank under intense scrutiny. Despite the political turmoil, La Banque du Peuple survived the crisis and continued operating for many years, becoming an enduring symbol of French-Canadian entrepreneurship and financial independence.

La Banque du Peuple is equally well known to numismatists for the attractive copper tokens it issued during the 1830s and 1840s to address the persistent shortage of small change in Lower Canada. The bank's Halfpenny and Penny tokens were struck to facilitate everyday commerce and circulated extensively throughout the colony alongside the issues of other chartered banks and private merchants. Featuring the bank's name and distinctive designs, these tokens quickly earned public confidence due to the institution's reputation and redeemability. Today, the tokens of La Banque du Peuple are regarded as some of the most historically significant colonial bank tokens, representing not only an important solution to the currency shortages of the era but also a tangible connection to the political and social tensions that shaped Lower Canada in the years surrounding the Rebellion.

LC-5A1 Variety: On the obverse, the "TU" in AGRICULTURE is joined by a die break, and there is no die break in "DA" of CANADA. On the reverse, the leaves at the top of the wreath are separated, and the ribbon has a thick bow. The edge is reeded, and the token is made of copper.
