LC-48-17 1812 Lower Canada Tiffin Token AU-UNC (AU-55)
Around 1832, Joseph Tiffin, a Montreal grocer, imported a quantity of lightweight halfpenny copper tokens from England. These were copies of an anonymous English halfpenny struck in 1812 from dies cut by Thomas Halliday. Eventually, the banks refused to accept any of these lightweight tokens as currency and accepted them only for their scrap metal value.
Obverse: Bust of George III facing right, within a wreath of acorns and oak leaves.
Reverse: Commerce seated on a bale facing left, holding scales in her right hand and a cornucopia in her left, with a ship sailing in the background, the denomination above, and the date below.
LC-48-17 Variety:
Obverse: The wreath is orientated in a clockwise direction. Within the wreath, the acorns and oak leaves are alternating above the head, and nearly all of the oak leaves and acorns have a stem. The top right laurel leaf is pointing to an oak leaf, and is far from it. George III is hideous.
Reverse: The legend reds the denomination and the date. There are eleven cannonballs, and Commerce's left hand doesn't rest on the bales, but is very close to it. Commerce's chignon is close to the centre foot of the "Y". The scales are large, and there are three daisies in the cornucopia.
