Named for the Zambezi River, Zambia is a landlocked country in the centre of Africa. Evidence of human and proto-human habitation goes back hundreds of thousands of years, with the earliest fossil remains dated to at least 274,000 years ago. Modern populations began arriving 2000 years ago, and their descendants remain to this day. Nature is a point of pride for Zambia: one full third of its area is dedicated to wildlife conservation and game-management parks. These notes display wildlife prominantly: on the obverse, the African fish eagle, and, on the reverse, the kudu, a woodland antelope with distinct, spiraling horns.
