1867-1967 Birks Yellowknife NWT Canada Gold Filled Medallion in Original Box

Perched on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife is the capital and largest city of the Northwest Territories. The city is named for the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, who founded the first permanent settlement in the area, at nearby Dettah, in the 1930s. Though located just 400km from the Arctic Circle, Yellowknife has the most sunshine of any Canadian city, averaging 2256.5 sunny hours per year.

This token was released to celebrate Canada's centennial in 1967 -- even though, in 1867, at the time of Confederation, the land that would be Yellowknife was still officially owned by the Hudson's Bay Company! The obverse features the shield of Yellowknife, whilst the reverse displays the shield of the Northwest Territories atop the Canadian Centennial logo. It is made of base metal that has been gold-filled (i.e. it has had gold heat-bonded to the exterior, as a sort of thick plating).
