In the early 1960s, planning for Canada's upcoming centennial celebrations inspired an idea: a national flag, something unique that celebrated a separate identity from the United Kingdom. Countless proposals were made, and months were spent reviewing. Eventually, the now-iconic flag was chosen: red and white, Canada's national colours, and featuring a central maple leaf, a Canadian symbol since the early days of the fur trade. The new flag was raised for the first time on February 15, 1965.
