Great Britain 1732 George II 1 Farthing Very Good (VG8) DOD
Born in Hanover, Germany, George (1683-1760) was the second of the four Kings George who bridge the Georgian era. He was crowned in 1727, following the death of his father, George I, and he is generally remembered as being churlish and short-tempered. He had no interest in the arts and sciences that dominated the 18th century, preferring to hunt and play cards, but the British Museum was founded during his reign, and he issued the charter for the school that would eventually become Columbia University in New York. British colonial power expanded under George II, with the addition of Gibraltar in 1729, Georgia (now a U.S. state) in 1732, and Quebec in 1759, as well as an expansion of power throughout the Caribbean and India.
