Poor Christian VII had a rough life. The son of an alcoholic father and a disinterested stepmother, his epilepsy and mental illness were largely ignored. Exactly what afflicted him is unknown, but it crippled him with paranoia and hallucinations, and when he ascended to the thrones of Denmark and Norway at the age of just seventeen, his weakness was exploited by everyone around him. Advisers and family members took turns puppeteering Christian, and in quick succession, his doctor, stepmother, half-brother, prime minister, and eventually, his son all rotated in and out as unofficial regents. Christian died of a stroke at the age of 59, brought on by terror at the sight of Spanish auxiliary troops, which he thought were hostile. The design on the obverse of this coin is his monogram: C7.
