Poland 1767 Stanislaw August 4 Groschen Very Fine (VF20) DOD
Stanislaw August Poniatowski was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1764, raised from obscurity by his intimate relationship with Russian Empress Catherine the Great. His legacy is largely considered to be a poor one: his continual losses on the field of war led to the partition of Poland, which ended the existence of the Polish state. When he lost the last of his power in 1795, Stanislaw abdicated and was taken as a Russian prisoner. He lived out the remainder of his days as a captive in the Marble Palace of Saint Petersburg. Poland would not regain independence until after World War I.
