One of the largest, richest, and most important Italian city-states (comprising the entirety of Italy's lower "boot"), Naples changed hands several times throughout the 18th century. It had been a Spanish holding from 1504 until the War of the Spanish Succession, when it fell into the hands of the Austrian Habsburgs. In 1734, however, it was reconquered by the future Spanish king Charles III during the War of the Polish Succession.
Charles III ruled Spain from 1759 until 1788. He was only 18 when he seized Naples, the young Duke of Parma and Piacenza. Naples would remain tied to Spain until 1861, when it became part of the unified Kingdom of Italy.
