Guernsey 1830 Double Extra Fine (EF-40)
The Guernsey 1830 Double was the first official copper coin issued by the States of Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency, to address a severe shortage of small change on the island. Its introduction in 1830 marked a significant step toward monetary independence, as Guernsey had previously relied on the French Livre, which had been obsolete since 1795, along with other foreign coins. The coin’s name, “Double,” derives from the French Double denier and reflects Guernsey’s Norman-French linguistic and cultural heritage, which persisted despite centuries of association with the British Crown.
