Canadian Tire Money was first introduced in 1958 at a Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) gas bar located at Yonge and Davenport streets in Toronto. The idea was inspired by Muriel Billes, wife of Canadian Tire’s co-founder and first president, Alfred J. Billes, as a response to the promotional giveaways offered by competing gas companies at the time. Initially available only at gas bars, the program proved so successful that by 1961 it was extended to Canadian Tire retail stores as well.
Until 1992, separate issues of coupons were printed—one redeemable at Canadian Tire gas bars and another at retail stores. Originally, Canadian Tire Money could only be issued and redeemed at locations in Eastern Canada, but in 1995 the program was expanded nationwide.
