In 1804, anticipating his empire's collapse to the looming menace of Napoleon, Holy Roman Emperor Franz II had himself crowned Franz I of the Austrian Empire. The plan was to consolidate the power and possessions of the Habsburg family out of Napoleon's reach and to prevent, at all costs, the family from becoming French vassals. When the death blow for the HRE came in 1805 at the Battle of Austerlitz, Franz transitioned Habsburg rule to this technically new dynasty, which he ruled until his death in 1835.
